Junior School Educational Programme

Junior School Educational Programme

All Key Learning Areas (K.L.A) as specified by the Board of Studies are taught from Kindergarten to Year 6 as follows: English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Human Society and its Environment, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, Creative Arts. In addition to the mandatory subjects the College teaches Modern Greek and Orthodox Studies.

Prep Middle School Programme
In 1999 a Preparatory Middle School Programme was established for Years 5 and 6. Three teachers with specialist subject talents are used to teach the four subjects as follows:-
Maths Teacher Year 5 and 6
Science Teacher Year 5 and 6
English / HSIE Teacher Year 5
English / HSIE Teacher Year 6
Home Room teachers have their class for administration, pastoral care, religion, creative arts, etc.

Special Programmes
St Spyridon College recognises that as the levels of students ability vary so do the curriculum requirements.

The range of students with special needs include:

  1. Students with remedial needs in Literacy and Numeracy.
  2. Students who are gifted and talented
  3. Students with social, emotional and behavioural problems

To accommodate the needs of the students the College employs:

  1. A support teacher to assist students experiencing learning difficulties
  2. A Gifted and Talented teacher for students with high intellectual potential.
  3. A Student Welfare Adviser for students requiring assistance with behavioural and social management skills

Assessment and Reporting

  1. Portfolios with continuous assessments including formal tests and work samples are kept and used as the basis of discussion with parents.
  2. Parent/Teacher interviews held twice yearly.
  3. Formal written reports sent to parents twice yearly.
  4. Basic Skills tests results sent to parents.
  5. UNSW Competition results sent to parents and recorded in Newsletter.

Parents are invited to make an appointment with the class teacher or the Principal to discuss their child’s progress at a mutally convenient time whenever concerns arise.

Other techniques used to assess student’s progress will include:

  • Standardised Tests in Maths, Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary.
  • Teacher formulated tests.
  • Class work samples.
  • Oral presentations and responses.
  • Project/research work.
  • Observation.
