A complete guide to subject choices

A complete guide to subject choices from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Plus Year 10 to Year 12 Academic Elevation and Leadership Programs.

UPPER SCHOOL (Year 10 to Year 12)
Academic Elevation and Leadership Programs

Every time we reprint this list it never ceases to surprise us when we see the remarkable variety of Subject and Activity choices available to students at St Spyridon College, from Kindergarten all the way
through to Year 12.

Choosing the appropriate subjects is just the beginning. Imparting a love of learning, a sense of community and a genuine respect for all human beings is just as important.

Hence our motto: Educational Excellence within a Caring Environment.

Part of this process is what we call our Academic Elevation and Leadership Programs. Unique to St Spyridon, these are based on four cornerstones.

1. Study skills
2. Personal development
3. Community service
4. Global connections

Their aim is simple. Enable all students - not just the gifted and talented - to reach more of their potential. It may simply be extra 5% achievement. Or a significant scholarship. But it works across the whole spectrum of students to ensure a more rewarding future for them all.

Preparing for the Preliminary and HSC Courses Program

This program is unique to St Spyridon College and is designed to cater for students moving to their HSC, from compulsory education and the School Certificate. It is a compulsory 10 to 12 day program that offers access to motivational speakers, community service and global awareness workshops, study skills, information on subject specific demands of the HSC and is sensitive to the mental and psychological demands of schooling in Years 11 and 12.

Parish Trip to Greece and Cyprus

This overseas program develops a deeper understanding in students of the Greek language and Hellenic culture. The three week program takes students from Athens to Thessaloniki, includes the veneration of St. Spyridon on Corfu Island, visits to archaeological sites, churches and monasteries, and finishes with the beaches of Cyprus. It addresses the development of the whole person in a new, exciting and often captivating environment.

Work Experience

To prepare students for their future careers and to assist them in making informed choices, students participate in the Work Experience program. They leave school for eight to ten days to experience a period of unpaid work in a specific field or occupation of interest to them. This assists in developing their future aspirations.

Pastoral and Academic Care Year 10

The Pastoral Care program is especially developed to cater for preparation for the School Certificate, subject selection for Years 11 and 12, careers awareness and school leadership. Students are encouraged
to become responsible and resilient through a carefully targeted skills program involving peer support, decision-making, critical literacy, evaluation and judgment, finding information, forming and maintaining relationships, independent thinking, developing a sense of identity, and communication.

YEAR 11

Leadership Camp – HSC Readiness Course

The Leadership Camp has a highly appropriate outdoor education component as well as self-managing strategies, at a time when students need to develop a sense of their changing role within the College. The program focuses on mental and physical readiness for their final year of schooling and the stressful demands of the HSC.

Pastoral and Academic Care Year 11

This program specifically targets the issues related to preparation for Year 11 and 12, careers awareness and school leadership specifically the Prefect Body. The program involves decision-making, critical literacy, evaluation and judgment, finding information, being assertive, forming and maintaining relationships, independent thinking and communication.

Children of Kenya Project

Our students work to support the children of Kenya in a small way, hoping to make a huge difference. Kenya’s people are ravaged by poverty, war and disease, and it is the children who have to struggle most. The street children scrabble to maintain the most basic form of
existence. The Year 11 students provide leadership to the whole school community as mentors, by organising information sessions and becoming involved in fundraising activities.

Careers Market

In Term 4 students are able to experience a Careers Market at our College, co-ordinated by our Career Adviser. Over forty agents from Universities, TAFEs Colleges and employer groups display the various opportunities available to students considering their careers and future tertiary study.

YEAR 12

Winter HSC Elevate Program

This program, initiated by the College, offers students a series of subject specific sessions maximising student performance for the HSC Trials and HSC Examination. Chemists, physicists, lawyers, working artists, mathematicians and teachers who are known to be highly successful as educators teach these sessions with acclaimed acknowledgement.

Pastoral and Academic Care Year 12

The most challenging aspect of this program is its aim to support our students’ personal transition from youth

to adulthood. It focuses on the perceptions of young people towards HSC issues, relationships, stress, goals, and self-esteem. This program specifically targets the issues related to preparation for Year 12, examination and study, careers awareness, the pressures of the HSC and school leadership.

Prefect Body

Students are elected to the prestigious role of leadership and throughout the year perform duties commensurate with the role of Prefect. There are many opportunities for students to develop leadership capabilities appropriate to their age level.
