Assessment Process
Kinder Minus One and Kindergarten
Students commencing Kinder Minus One must be 4 years old on, or before, 31 May in preparation for entry into Kindergarten the following year. Students commencing Kindergarten must be 5 years old on, or before 31 May.
Enrolment for the Kinder Minus One program is only for children who will be attending Kindergarten the following year. It is a condition of enrolment that children are completely independent at toileting.
A school entry assessment is conducted to attest to the child’s readiness to commence formal schooling and includes:
- Oral communication skills
- Literacy (print concepts, letter identification, phonemic awareness, sight words)
- Fine motor skills and physical development
- Social behaviours, interaction skills, and emotional maturity
- Information from Reports/Portfolio profiles from pre-entry institutions
- Information from reports from other professionals, for example Psychologists, medical practitioners, and therapists.
Acceptance to the Kinder Minus One program will be based on a student’s academic level and readiness, the behaviour, welfare, and safety of other students, and whether the student’s needs can be met with the offerings available to them via our program. Information will be sought from previous education institutions, including childcare and preschool, as well as current reporting from specialist practitioners.
Years 1-6
Acceptance to the College will be based on a student’s academic level and readiness, the behaviour, welfare, and safety of other students, and whether the student’s needs can be met with the offerings available to them via our program. Information will be sought from previous education institutions, where academic progress reports, NAPLAN reports, and general feedback will be required, as well as current reporting from specialist practitioners.
For students entering Years 4, 5, or 6, an additional academic assessment may be necessary to evaluate their academic needs and determine how well their abilities align with the prospective cohort.
Year 7
Student entry into Year 7 is typically finalised when students are in Year 5. Students who are not enrolled at the St Spyridon Junior Campus are invited to sit an Entrance Examination during Term 4 of Year 5. This diagnostic assessment evaluates the student’s academic needs and determines how well their abilities align with the prospective cohort.
